Junior Research Technician – Full time

Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Junior Research Technician to support our laboratory operations and research activities. The successful candidate will provide essential technical support, assist with routine and specialized procedures, and ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the laboratory. This role is ideal for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in molecular biology, immunology, and cell-based research within a collaborative environment.

Salary: $46,000 - $53,000 dependent on skills and experience

This position is based in Victoria, BC. where the main activity is fee-for-service antibody development for international clients.

Key responsibilities shall include:

Laboratory Support & Maintenance

  • Perform routine daily, weekly, and monthly laboratory maintenance.
  • Prepare and label buffers, solutions, and other reagents.
  • Autoclave consumables and maintain sterility of lab equipment.
  • Monitor and restock lab supplies and consumables.
  • Maintain lab organization, including equipment maintenance, cleaning, and waste management.
  • Support inventory management by maintaining accurate records and coordinating with staff on supply needs and orders.
  • Change CO2 tanks as needed.

Technical Assistance

  • Work under the supervision of senior staff and train on aseptic technique, B cell handling, and equipment operation.
  • Assist with clone picking by consolidating supernatants and cell pellets, including lysing/storing pellets and preparing samples for re-screening ELISAs.
  • Support ELISAs by coating plates, testing supernatants, washing, preparing secondary antibodies, and visualizing results.
  • Prepare sample labels; spin down cells and transfer supernatants into labelled tubes.
  • Assist with molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, plasmid prep, transformations, and transfections.
  • Assist with documentation for batch records, reports and lab logs.

Other Responsibilities: 

  • Manage an email account and attend company/lab meetings.
  • Perform consistent work practices in accordance with IPA Canada protocols, policies, and Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs).  
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating SOPs under guidance of senior staff.

Other duties assigned by the Company from time to time.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in a life sciences field, or equivalent experience.
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology and immunoassay techniques.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety and sterile practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols.
  • Good organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop new skills.
